Spring Mattresses:
 | Spring Coil Bed Information! |
What to know about spring coil beds |
Probably the most well know mattress type is the innerspring mattress. These beds are made to support the sleepers body with a series of continuous coils. Spring mattresses are characterized by three separate components: The spring core (or innerspring), the foundation, and the upholstery layers. The core of the mattress supports the sleeper’s body weight. The springs are generally made of steel coil springs, or “coils.” The gauge of the coil is what determines the firmness and support of the spring mattress. The lower the number of coils, the thicker the spring used in the mattress. In general high quality mattresses have coil gauges around 14, which give more easily, while a 12.5 gauge coil feels very firm. When shopping for a bed make sure to ask what gauge coils are being used in the spring mattress. It should be noted that more coils does not mean a longer lasting mattress. When an innerspring mattress begins to fall apart it is usually due to a breakdown in the upholstry or boxspring that causes the mattress to sag.
Types of Coils: Mattress coils come in four types: - Bonnell coils-oldest and most common
- Marshall Coils-can usually be found in Simmons "Beautyrest" mattresses
- Offset coils-hinge, therefore conform to the sleepers shape
- Continuous coils-similar to offset coils
Most mattress companies offer a variety of innerspring beds in different levels of firmness. The type of spring bed that is best for the user depends on the type of sleeper the person is. When deciding how to buy a bed, the type of sleeper you are will make a differnece with how firm or plush you should by your bed. Some of the best know spring beds in the world are manufactured by Sealy, and include the infamous Sealy Posturepedic mattress line. Other well know spring mattress lines include beds by Stearns and Foster, and the Simmons "Beautyrest" line. Check out this article about how to care for your mattress. |
