How to Buy a Bed:

How To Buy A Bed:

When buying a mattress the first thing you should consider is what kind of sleeper you are. Do you sleep mostly on your back, side, or stomach? Knowing this is a great place to start the search for your mattress.

Back Sleepers:

If you are a back sleeper the best advice, and general rule is go firm. Remember though that there is a difference between firm and just plain hard. A firm mattress has enough resistance to keep your spine straight when sleeping, whereas a mattress that is too soft will not support the spine enough. Back sleepers have a larger area to lie on than side sleepers, therefore there is less weight per square inch placed on the body. The best mattress for a back sleeper will be firm, but still have enough give to conform to the joints.

Side Sleepers:

Side sleepers should consider a mattress that is not as firm as one for a back sleeper. This does not mean that side sleepers should buy a soft bed, rather they should buy a mattress that gives enough to conform to the natural bumps and curves of the side sleeping position. It is recommended when sleeping on your side to put a pillow in between your legs to prevent pelvis rotation in the night, and will help keep your spine in proper alignment.

Stomach Sleepers:

Stomach sleepers take note that sleeping on your stomach can irritate your neck and back due to the rotation of the neck to one side in this position. If you are unable to make the change to becoming a side or back sleeper than try to find a mattress that is soft enough on the surface to forgo the use of a pillow which will only push the neck further out of alignment. Like a back sleeper, the best mattress for a stomach sleeper will be one that has supportive density, but also enough give to conform to the sleeper's body.

All Sleepers:

A mattress that will effectivly support the body while providing enough give to conform to the natural shapes and curves of the body is ideal. Remember to always use a pillow between your legs when sleeping on your side, or under your pelvis when sleeping on your stomach to limit movement.
